Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis has launched the Center for Computational and AI-enabled Imaging Sciences, a major new initiative focused on developing advanced artificial intelligence tools to enhance medical imaging diagnostics across multiple disease areas. The center brings together experts from the Mallinckrodt Institute of Radiology, the McKelvey School of Engineering, and partner research units to create AI-driven solutions that integrate data from MRI, CT, X-ray, mammography and other imaging modalities. By leveraging sophisticated computational approaches and large imaging datasets, the center aims to identify clinically meaningful patterns and early biomarkers that could improve disease detection, prognosis, and personalized treatment planning.
The effort represents an ambitious expansion of WashU’s imaging science leadership, building on a long history of innovation from pioneering PET systems to today’s AI imaging research. The new center will also support training for clinicians and researchers on these tools, helping bridge the gap between cutting-edge computational methods and everyday clinical practice. Notable early projects include AI tools that can analyze mammograms to estimate individualized breast cancer risk and rapid brain-mapping software designed to assist neurosurgical planning. By fusing multimodal imaging data with AI and machine learning, researchers hope to detect subtle disease indicators that conventional imaging alone might miss, potentially enabling clinicians to diagnose conditions earlier and tailor interventions more precisely.
